Pinehouse Uranium Collaboration Agreement Debate Hits the Airwaves

Awareness of the outrageous gag order clauses in the draft terms of a Collaboration Agreement between Cameco, Areva and the northern village of Pinehouse is rising. CBC Saskatchewan’s Blue Sky program aired an interview with Pinehouse residents and Committee for Future Generations members Fred Pederson and John Smerek addressing their concerns today, after featuring Cameco VP of Corporate Social Responsibility Gary Merasty on the show yesterday. CBC As It Happens‘ Carol Off questioned Pinehouse mayor Mike Natomagan about the gag order clauses during today’s show, beginning just after the 27 minute mark. Today’s radio airtime also follows written coverage by the CBC, the Saskatoon StarPhoenix, the Regina Leader-Post and MBC radio. Take a look at Mark Bigland-Pritchard’s summary analysis of the document for a more detailed look at some of the most problematic clauses.

  1. “Kids, your new daddy is really shy, so before I bring him home, I want you to promise never to complain about anything he does to you. He needs a quiet place where he won’t keep getting teased about how many people he’s killed. Don’t get off on the wrong foot, because once I bring him here, the place will never be the same, and he couldn’t leave if he wanted to, and he already gave me a pretty necklace.”
Seriously, does this sound like it is going to be a happy story?
